On Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at approximately 1:20 a.m., Emergency Communications received a call for a robbery at the BP gas store located in the 3000 block of Holland Rd., near the intersection of Dam Neck Rd., in the City of Virginia Beach.
Police responded to the scene and spoke with the two clerks. One clerk stated that the suspect approached the counter, displayed a knife, and ordered him to open the cash drawer. The second clerk came from the back room and startled the suspect. The suspect struck the clerk and fled the store on foot without obtaining any money. The clerk was treated at the scene for minor injuries to the face.
The suspect is described as black male, eighteen to twenty-five years old, 5’09” to 6’00” tall and a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled up, dark pants, black gloves, a mask covering the lower portion of his face, and a Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap. He was armed with a knife.
The approaching winter season traditionally brings about an increase in the number of auto thefts, and the Hampton Police Division would like the public’s assistance in keeping auto thefts at a minimum. During the morning hours when the temperature is at its lowest, many residents go out and start their vehicle, leaving the keys in the ignition. Thieves look for opportunities, and this is an excellent opportunity for someone to steal the vehicle. In addition, while traveling into work, many folks stop into local convenience stores for a cup of coffee and leave the vehicle parked and running. Again, it only takes a split second for someone to jump into the vehicle and drive away with it.
The Hampton Police Division would like for the public to do their part by not leaving vehicles unattended when it is running or when the keys are in the ignition. The public’s voluntary compliance will greatly aid the Police Division in keeping the number of auto thefts down this winter.
The City of Hampton Code 21-128 states, “It shall be unlawful for any person to leave a vehicle unattended in a public place without removing the ignition keys from such vehicle.” In order to minimize the number of auto thefts that occur as a result of vehicles being left unattended with keys in the ignition, the Hampton Police Division will strictly enforce this Hampton City Code.
Remember, when someone steals a vehicle, the opportunity for additional damage to that vehicle, other vehicles, innocent bystanders and property is greatly increased. Please be mindful of others and assist the Hampton Police Division by being responsible for your vehicle.

He was wearing a black hat, black hoody and blue jeans.
