The approaching winter season traditionally brings about an increase in the number of auto thefts, and the Hampton Police Division would like the public’s assistance in keeping auto thefts at a minimum. During the morning hours when the temperature is at its lowest, many residents go out and start their vehicle, leaving the keys in the ignition. Thieves look for opportunities, and this is an excellent opportunity for someone to steal the vehicle. In addition, while traveling into work, many folks stop into local convenience stores for a cup of coffee and leave the vehicle parked and running. Again, it only takes a split second for someone to jump into the vehicle and drive away with it.

The Hampton Police Division would like for the public to do their part by not leaving vehicles unattended when it is running or when the keys are in the ignition. The public’s voluntary compliance will greatly aid the Police Division in keeping the number of auto thefts down this winter.

The City of Hampton Code 21-128 states, “It shall be unlawful for any person to leave a vehicle unattended in a public place without removing the ignition keys from such vehicle.” In order to minimize the number of auto thefts that occur as a result of vehicles being left unattended with keys in the ignition, the Hampton Police Division will strictly enforce this Hampton City Code.

Remember, when someone steals a vehicle, the opportunity for additional damage to that vehicle, other vehicles, innocent bystanders and property is greatly increased. Please be mindful of others and assist the Hampton Police Division by being responsible for your vehicle.

At approximately 7:33 A.M. Friday Oct 2008, a truck from Asphalt Roads & Material Co. was parked in the middle of the road near the front of Landstown Middle School blocking traffic.

After a short while, another truck came from the opposite direction stopped at the truck in the other lane and passed a magazine. The truck then continued.

When the first truck got near Sentara Hospital, away from the intersection, he stopped his truck in the middle of the road and stared at the parent who was waiting behind him near the school in an attempt to intimidate the parent. He then continued on to the intersection. He was wearing a blue pullover older and is described as sagging face, older, dark complexion.

Should anyone have any encounters with employees of Asphalt Roads & Material Co. they should contact the police. Try to get a license plate but do not engage these drivers.
