On November 29, 2009 at 12:13 a.m., the Hampton Police Division received several e911 calls regarding a man who had been shot in the 1st block of Mitchell Road. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the location and located the victim, a 28 year-old Newport News man, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Riverside Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 3:01 a.m.

The preliminary investigation reveals that several people were in the backyard of a residence in the 1st block of Mitchell Road. They got into a physical altercation and at some point during the altercation; the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as it becomes available.
